THE MEMPHIS CONFERENCE.

The editor of the N. C. Advocate was present at this Conference, which met at Somerville, Tenn. From his issue of Nov. 9th we learn that "the Conference was well attended, the preachers generally being in their places, and a vast crowd of visitors being present. All were accommodated in a style and with a hospitality peculiar to Western Tennesseans. Bishop Paine presided with his usual ability, and the members of the Conference conducted themselves with much propriety, though business of vast importance was transacted, and the session somewhat protracted. The houses of worship belonging to the different denominations, were all open to the congregations, and the crowds attending were very large and attentive. The preaching was in power, and good was effected.

"The anniversary of the Missionary Society was interesting. At the Presbyterian church Dr. Taylor, of China, and Rev. W. McMahon, addressed the audience, and a collection amounting, we learned, to some $500. was taken up. At the Methodist Church, Rev. E. C. Slater, and the Editor of the Nashville Christian Advocate, advocated the cause of Missions and collected some $750. In all, between $1200 and $1300 were raised in aid of the glorious missionary enterprise. This is the banner anniversary of the season, as far as we have heard."

With respect to the union of the Memphis C. Advocate, with the N. Advocate, the Editor says: "the propriety of this measure was discussed at great length, and in the spirit of kindness—the Editor of the Nashville Christian Advocate favoring the union, and the Editor of the Memphis Christian Advocate and other brothers proposing. A majority, we suppose of nearly two-thirds, voted against the proposition presented in the memorial from the Tennessee Conference; and hence it was determined to continue the paper at Memphis. This, as a matter of policy we regretted, believing that united, we could accomplish much more good, and at a far less expense; but a majority differed with us, and in honesty believed that the two should not be merged into one. To this decision we, of course bow submissively, and shall proceed to accomplish our work as best we can."

The Conference, by a unanimous vote favored compliance with a request from the citizens of Florence that LaGrange College be removed from its present location to that place.

"Dr. Taylor's visit was highly appreciated. His brethren of the Conference gave him a hearty welcome, and resolved that should a missionary for China be selected from the Conference, they pledged themselves for his outfit and support in his distant field. The Doctor is doing a good work in his visitations to the Conferences and the churches."

The appointments had not been announced when the Editor left for home.
