Yardmaster Demorest reports more cars of coal sent out up to the present time this month than in any previous period of the same length in the history of the Rock Springs coal mines. If the car supply does not fail, August will see 7,000 cars of coal sent out. Some of this coal is put in sacks and billed by rail to Portland, Oregon, whence it goes up the Columbia river and out over the hills on burro backs to mining camps. During the spring and summer several carloads of this sacked coal has been shipped to Portland. It is double screened and cleaned here, carefully sacked and carefully shipped, and while it is certain that the company makes no money on it, it must still be expensive fuel when it reaches its destination.
