Full Text
We have only to review the state of nations, and the wretched policy which prevails in Europe, to induce a most hearty contentment in our own country. When all the dangers of the British crown cannot induce that nation to change a policy which oppresses a large portion of the empire— when the intrigues of courts make wars, which end in general distress—when powerful allies shew each other no pity; when neutral nations without any offence are sacrificed upon the supposed exigencies of foreign nations, and to assist these foreign powers in their operations against each other—when united operations by sea and land cannot assure any nations, whether they fight with or against their foes—we surely may congratulate ourselves that we are not the subjects of princes, that we are not the slaves of ancient systems, which were wise only because the means of our present good were unknown, and that, upon equal laws, we possess prosperity and peace. We have reason to bless God for our liberty and laws, and our constitution of Government.
