CHRISTMAS IN MUSIC

The occasion of Christmas has called forth some of the finest expressions of the human spirit in the form of music. Perhaps the carols are the simplest because they are folk songs or ballads that have won a lasting place in the hearts of plain folk and for this reason they are the most popular. Some of them are early Latin tunes reaching as far back as the fourth century and translated and/ adapted in the 15th and 19th centuries. Negro spirituals also captured the spirit of Christmas as in "Go, Tell It on the Mountain" and in "Wasn't That A Mighty Day?"
Handel's Messiah with its immortal Hallelujah Chorus is no doubt the recognized masterpiece of Christmas music.
