City to Improve Gorge Highway

Street Commissioner Tom Parker and a number of the department employees will devote themselves to the improvement of the public highway through the City park at the top of the Royal Gorge next week. They will leave here Sunday afternoon with two teams so as to be in readiness to begin work Monday morning. A road grader, with scrapers, shovels, picks and other necessary tools and equipment for road construction, will be taken along.

Camp will be established at the city toolhouse, formerly the old city hall, near the road side, some seven or eight miles from town, where sleeping accommodations will be provided for the party. Mrs. Tom Parker will go along and will do the cooking for the men. Stables for the horses will be established for the teams nearby.

The city has control of about three miles of roadway along the route to the top of the Royal Gorge, and the authorities have decided to put it in fine condition for travel at the time of the Elks' convention here on September 8, 9 and 10, when, it is expected that 700 Elks will traverse it for the purpose of looking down into the grand canyon of the Arkansas river.

The county is also expected to make some improvements to its portion of the road before that time.

The city will also put the Skyline drive and the Tunnel road in good shape for motor vehicles as soon as it gets through with the first-named job in order that the visiting Elks may better appreciate their great natural beauty. Owing to the demands upon the street department from other quarters during the summer months, it has heretofore been impossible to give much attention to the scenic highways about town.
