as a Day of solemn Thanksgiving to Almighty God.
for delivering us from the French. All the Ministers
preached on Psal. cxxvi. 1. 2, 3. When the Lord
turned again the Captivity of Zion, we were like
them that dream. Then was our Mouth filled
with Laughter, and our Tongue with Singing:
Then said they among the Heathen, the Lord hath
done great Things for them, the Lord hath done
great Things for us, whereof we are glad. Some
of our Preachers did not hesitate to point out so plainly
the generous French Lord, to whom, under God, it
is owing that we are not entirely ruined, that their
Audience could easily perceive they meant the Duke
de Randan.
Had it not been for that noble Lord, whom Pro-
vidence brought back from Paris (whither he had
made a Tour) in the most critical Minute. all the
Provisions the French had amassed here, would have
been thrown into the River: this was actually begun
to be done, when, in consequence of the Duke's Re-
monstrances,
an
Order came from the Count de
Clermont to countermand it. There were found
4000 Sacks of fine Wheat, a considerable Quantity
of Rye, Barley, and Oats, besides Meal, Bread, and
Rice; Part thereof was distributed gratis, to the Poor,
and the rest sold at a low Price to those that had
something left to pay for it. This has prevented
that Famine to which we should otherwise have been
reduced.
To prevent Pillage, and other Irregularities, this
truly noble Lord was pleased to patrol the Streets
of this City, from Time to Time, in Person, the last
Night the French stayed here.
