SAVANNAH. MAY 10.

From Buenos Ayres. The British cutter Hero, Capt. Garnock, ar. at this port yesterday morning from Buenos Ayres. She sailed on the 2d March, and has on board several gentlemen, passengers from that country. We learn that the Patriot army under the command of Gen. Martin had crossed the Cordilleras of Chili, had had a general engagement, and beaten the enemy at Chacabuco, and after much slaughter was advancing. At the same time there had arrived in the River Plate, Carreras, with two armed vessels from the U. States of America, to reconquer his native soil, There was no doubt that both forces co-operating for the same object, would ensure another time the liberty of that fine country—the greatest difficulties being already surmounted. On the eastern side of the River Plate, all the country has armed to repel from their soil the Portuguese, who have taken Monte Video. Every day Signor Fructuoso Rivera has skirmishes with those who attempt to come out from the walls of that city. The night before the Hero sailed, the town of Buenos Ayres was brilliantly illuminated, and great rejoicings going on, in consequence of the victory gained over the Royalists by the Patriot troops in Chili. Several stand of colors and some cannon, were taken from the enemy. The Republican cause, at that time, was never in a better condition. We also learn, that the war has become entirely popular, and the Portuguese Government is odious in the extreme, and that ambitious nation hated—who had employed traitors to facilitate their means of entering the country to subjugate it. But it has seen that treason cannot destroy the opinion of so many inhabitants who have already tasted the effects of liberty. The government of Buenos Ayres, in consequence of not having declared war, against the general will, are looked upon as traitors, and being publicly blamed, have taken the most violent and scandalous means for keeping order. We have received by the Hero, a few Buenos Ayres papers, and from their contents we are inclined to believe that the Patriot cause will triumph over intrigue.—Republican.
