POETICAL.
To Amanda.
There is a certain melancholy
In hearts that love like mine
A deadened sadness sweetness
Within it hallowed shrine.
Whose soul-felt tone, low murmuring
Is echoed through the breast,
Like the sea-shell's softened music
When the ocean is at rest.
What though the clouds of sorrow
Should darken o'er my fate!
The heart young love inhabits
Can ne'er be desolate.
Oh no, for there thine image
Is shedding round a light
Earth's deepest, gloomiest shadow
Can never make all night.
