DOUBLE TRAGEDY.

Fatal Ending of a Buggy Ride With a Divorced Woman—Ex-Husband Arrested.

Watertown, N. Y., April 16.—A special to the Standard from Sackett Harbor says a horrible crime was committed in the vicinity of that village, where the Ninth United States Army regiment was stationed, about ten miles from this city, some time last night. During the afternoon or evening George Allen, steward at Madison barracks, hired a horse and carriage at a livery stable in Sackett Harbor and took two women out driving. One of his companions was a young lady of Sackett Harbor, Miss Lily. The other was a divorced woman, Mrs. Crouch. At 2:30 o'clock this morning the horse came back to the livery stable drawing the carriage, and the bodies of the two women were found in the bottom of it. About this time Allen came staggering into the barracks in a weakened condition and he too is expected to die. He has made an ante-mortem statement to the effect that Crouch, the husband of the divorced woman, assaulted the whole party, murdered the two women and threw him (Allen) into a creek. Crouch is under arrest. In the rig was found a six-chambered revolver with four loaded cartridges and two empty chambers. The revolver is the property of Allen. According to Allen's story he was thrown out of the buggy near the iron bridge which spans Mill creek and fell into the water but soon extricated himself and shot and stabbed as he was he managed to crawl to the kitchen door of the quarters. Crouch, who was arrested and placed under close surveillance, had a knife found in his pocket but no blood stains were on it nor was there anything about his appearance nor about his actions to point toward his guilt. Crouch and his wife had not lived together for a long time. The women were domestics in the house of one of the officers of the fort.
