These dispatches announce to the Directory, that without reinforcements it would be impossible for Buonaparte to proceed, or even to maintain his position at Cairo, for any length of time, as the inhabitants in general were inimical to his progress: information from another source states that he is master of no more ground than what is immediately occupied by his army.
Official accounts, received by the ministry state, that Gen. Buonaparte sustained great loss in his march from Alexandria to Cairo; that he was engaged in three very obstinate battles; that although he had plenty of provisions, he was in want of military stores, of wines and brandy; this circumstance will place the Arabs on an equality with the invader; that he was at variance with his officers, who were discontented with the expedition; that the soldiery were sickly, with the deleterious waters of the country; that the Grand Signior was making every effort to collect a force to cut off supplies from reaching the French camp.
Buonaparte, it is said, has cut off the heads of above 200 Turks for rejoicing at the victory over the French fleet.
