MERELY COMMENT
The streetcar men offered five good men from whom to pick a third arbitrator.
Any one of them could have given the companies a square deal.
But maybe a square deal isn't what the magnates wanted.
It isn't any cinch that the companies didn't help frame up a strike so as to bust the union.
Anyhow, the public ought to give the men a square deal, even if the magnates won't.
It's mighty dangerous policy to let detective agencies hire gunmen and sluggers and then make special policemen of them.
And then turn those special policemen over to the companies.
It is equivalent to lending the authority of the law to one side in the war.
Everybody knows the companies are making enough money out of the people to pay the men a decent wage.
Busby, Blair and Budd get thousands a year more than they are worth:
And the men get much less than they are worth.
That's the difference.
Too many thousands are going to pay enormous and exorbitant salaries.
All Chicago is inconvenienced because of the hoggishness of the private owners of the street railway system.
The mayor had a session yesterday with the representatives of all daily newspapers EXCEPT THE DAY BOOK.
The very newspapers that tried to defeat him for mayor.
By the way, the street car companies are buying page space in the dailies.
Telling the people all about it. Nuff said.
Now's a good time for the strikers to cut out the booze.
It's also a good time for the jitneys to show what they can do.
