THE
AMERICAN.
Providence,
FRIDAY, AUGUST 12, 1814.
The Election.
As the Biennial Election for Members of Congress rapidly approaches, we embrace a seasonable opportunity to remind our federal friends of its incalculable importance, and to exhort them to that vigilance and unanimity which are indispensably necessary to an honourable result.--As questions of great moment will undoubtedly be discussed and decided in the next Congress, you should strenuously exert yourselves for the election of men who will faithfully represent your sentiments and fearlessly defend your interests--for men who will ably and intrepidly oppose the infatuated policy of the present administration, and exercise the knowledge and the eloquence with which nature has richly endowed them, for the restoration of Peace and Prosperity to our disquieted and impoverished land.
JAMES B. MASON, Esq. and JOHN L. BOSS, jun. Esq. are the gentlemen whom you are invited to honour with your suffrages.-- They are HONEST and CAPABLE; they are the decided opposers of war and its attendant evils, and the firm advocates for the wise policy which distinguished the administration of Washington. Possessing these essential requisites for office, can you hesitate to give them your cordial and undivided support?
The present awful crisis admonishes you to unanimity and vigilance; it demands the sacrifice of petty feuds, of local jealousies and personal animosities to the common good; it discountenances the indulgence of those fastidious feelings which prompt many political Epicureans to withhold their suffrages from candidates, merely because they do not, in every particular, suit their taste.--It is hoped that no such feelings will, at the approaching election, be allowed to trespass on the sacred ground of duty; but that every federalist in the State will give his suffrage to the candidates who are recommended to his support.
Should democrats be elected, (and exertion can alone prevent it) RHODE-ISLAND will forfeit the honourable character she has, for several years past, maintained in the councils of the nation; the confederacy of men of talents and integrity who represent New-England, in Congress, will be weakened, and, above all, our country will be deprived of patriotick and inflexible supporters.
Federalists! be vigilant and united, and success will reward your exertions!--Forget not what you owe to your party and your country.
