To the PRINTERS.

FEW, very few Characters, in royal and dignified Stations, are justly known till they have been dead some Time--And no Character that I have been acquainted with, has suffered more from the most implacable venom; and the most infamous malignity; even malice itself could not have been more bitter and satirical, than the many prostituted venal Pens that have been employed against the late Princess Dowager of Wales; whose true Character is very little known in America; I am therefore induced, as a Friend to injured innocence to assert her genuine Portrait, without any Heightening of Colours or rhetorical Touches, and only attempt to do strict Justice to the Memory of one of the best of Women, one of the most amiable Princesses that ever lived. She was wholly disposed to Acts of charity humanity and mercy; to the soft, condescending and beneficent Offices of social Life--She was an Honour to her Sex--In the elegant and sublime Language of holy Writ, she was Eyes to the Blind, Feet to the Lame; in a Word she was worthy of being the Mother of our most gracious Sovereign George the third, the most powerful Prince on Earth, who God of his infinite Mercy long continue to reign in the Hearts of his free and brave Subjects.--But alas! this great, good and God-like Woman is no more, She is gone no doubt to receive the Rewards due to her exalted Merit, and is waked to Raptures in a Life to come, and received into those blessed Mansions above with that transporting Plaudit, Well done thou good and faithful Servant, enter thou into the Joy of thy Lord. It seems in her last Moments, when Things appear in their true Colours, stript of all Disguises, she met Death with that firmness and Christian Fortitude which is the natural Consequence of a Review of a Life well spent strictly conformable to the Rules of Virtue.
