Area In Turkey Show
Heavy Life Loss
ISTANBUL, June 3—(P)—The Interior ministry said Monday night the known death toll in last Friday's earthquake in eastern Turkey had reached 390, but tales of horror only now beginning to trickle out of the stricken area indicated that more than 600 persons may have been crushed to death in their quake-toppled homes.
The violent seven-second tremor laid flat village after village in Mus and Erzurum provinces, leaving uncounted thousands homeless.
Toll May Double
Of the 390 known fatalities, the ministry said, 260 occurred at Ustukan where, it was predicted, the final list of dead would be double that figure. At Varto, 95 per cent destroyed, 47 persons died, including 39 children under five years of age.
