The court of Spain has forwarded to our court, we are assured, a copy of the treaty lately entered into with France, which it is thought will determine all differences between that crown and ours.
People are greatly divided in their sentiments with regard to a Spanish war; for notwithstanding the many preparations seemingly made on all sides for it, there is a rumour that a peace is at no great distance.
Letters from Paris of the 5th inst. advise that thirty battalions of militia had been disbanded in order to restore useful hands to agriculture, which is justly become a favourite object with the ministry; It is added that the service of these men in the army can be easily spared, as it is the intention of the court to keep no longer such a numerous force in Germany, where it is not desirous of making conquests.
They write from Paris, that a body of 25 or 30000 men is assembled in Brittany; and as other preparations are making in that province, it is supposed that some grand enterprise is on the anvil.
The greatest diligence is using to get two or three fleets ready for the sea, with the utmost expedition, to be ready as occasion may require.
The troops of Marshal Broglio, 'tis said are to return to France by the way of Fulda and Worms, to the amount of 20 battalions and 20 squadrons.
Several large ships in the River are getting ready for privateers in expectations of a war breaking out with Spain.
It is said that twelve men of war and 2 bombs are ordered to join Adm. Saunders in the Mediterranean.
We hear that an answer from the court of Spain is expected in a few days, which will determine a war or continuance of peace with that nation.
