Jonathan Russell, vs. Seth Hunt.—A week or two since, we published an article from the Vermont Statesman, relative to the libel case of Jonathan Russell vs. Seth Hunt, to which we appended a few remarks, expressing a hope, that he would ultimately come out and defend himself, and not quietly sit down beneath the accusations of Seth Hunt. In the paragraph, we stated that the action had been withdrawn, which assertion was founded on the authority of the Vermont Editor. The paragraph has called Mr. Russell to the field, and he has authorized the Editor of the Boston Statesman to say, that the suit is not withdrawn, but will speedily be brought to issue: That the cause of delay has been a failure, on the part of the commissioners, appointed to take evidence in England, to execute their commission: And that the commission to France has been returned, executed: and further, that it is Mr. Russell's intention to prosecute the trial, with very little delay for the evidence from England.

This information, as a matter of intelligence, we now gladly lay before the public, though we do very much doubt whether Mr. Russell proceeds to trial. It is a little singular, that so much delay should have transpired, when so much was at stake. Indeed, there has been, throughout the whole of this affair, a want of promptitude on the part of Mr. Russell, which goes, in no small degree, to strengthen the belief, that he is satisfied that Mr. Hunt will, on trial, make good his charges. The public should, however, wait for the decision of the trial, before they make up an opinion; and it becomes them to treat the affair, and the parties, with that delicacy, which ought ever to govern us, when the affairs of individuals are brought before the tribunals of the nation, for investigation and adjustment.
