The Van Buren Dinner.—On the eighth of the present month, a collection of Van Buren members of Congress and others, met together in Washington, and ate a great quantity of meats, and drank a much greater quantity of wine, not to speak of other liquors forbidden by the Temperance Societies, all under pretence of glorifying General Jackson for the battle of New Orleans—and praising the wisdom of the lawgivers who so arranged it that the National Debt became extinguished in the year 1834—although that event had very nigh been prolonged, in consequence of the waste and abuse of the public money by the present Administration, in many branches of the Government, but particularly in that sink of iniquity and den of corruption, the Post Office Department. Well, at this aforesaid dinner, one Hon. T. H. Benton, who shot General Jackson in the streets of Nashville, and afterwards wrote something about the East Room, presided; and among the Vice Presidents, was a certain Hon. Isaac Hill—'so were they all, all honorable men.' And Mr. Benton spoke, and Mr. Wayne spoke—who should not have spoken; and Mr. White spoke—who had much rather been doing any thing else; and various others spoke, and Mr. Hill did not read—for which, doubtless, the company returned thanks. Well, by and by, an uproarious Tennessean jumps at, or upon, the table, and swears that New-York is going a little ahead of any thing else, and he'd be d—d if the West must'nt have a say; and then, after a good deal of fuss, the west had her say, and the Tennessean became satisfied. Well, after that, the speeches went on, and the toasts went out, and the wine went down, and the company HuRRae'd FOR Jackson—'to which complexion they all came at last'—and so our story's ended:

"And when a dinner next they eat,
May we be there to see."
