Full Text

Feb. 14. According to some Letters from the Hague, it has been lately debated in the Assembly of the States General, whether they Should not issue Letters of Marque and Reprisal for Depredations committed on the Vessels of the Republick's Subjects by British Men of War and Privateers ? But the question passed in the Negative by a very small Majority. Some of the coolest Heads in the Assembly represented that such a Step (tho' just in their Opinion) would be very ill timed ; and at last, it was resolved that Remonstrances should be made to the British Court, in order to get our Commanders of Men of War and Privateers provided with such Instructions for future Behaviour, as may let them clearly see what Goods in Neutral Bottoms are to be deemed contraband.
