Event Details
All wards participate in the publication of a weekly newspaper named Ward Words, with contributions from soldiers in each ward and a lovelorn column edited by Miss Fix. Patients visit Red Cross buildings with lounges, libraries, auditoriums, craft shops, and recreation halls for games, contests, plays, recordings, bingo, county fairs, woodworking, basketball, volleyball, and softball. Convalescents engage in activities morning, afternoon, and early evening. Professional staff headed by Miss Mary Ruth Pippen, formerly of Birmingham, Ala., assisted by volunteers from Fort Bragg auxiliary and Fayetteville Red Cross chapter, including Gray Ladies, Motor Corps, and Recreation Aides. Staff includes 29 specialists in social, psychiatric, and recreation work, mostly with medical training, who plan programs based on soldiers' interests.
