The Carrington Independent issues a very creditable magazine supplement for distribution, designed to attract the attention of immigrants and investors to Carrington and to Foster county. The brochure is very neatly designed and executed and contains many pages of reading matter, made more interesting by the pictures of various farm and city scenes with which it is illustrated.

Foster is one of the best counties in the state, and its resources and advantages have been well set forth by the magazine. The example of the Independent is to be commended to the newspapers through the state, provided always of course they can obtain the backing from business men and real estate organizations to warrant the undertaking. The time has come in the state when all counties and cities should co-operate with the state and railroads, who have heretofore borne the burden of immigration work, to issue such literature as will set their localities in a good light before the investing world, at the same time attract immigration. There promises to be a rush westward this year and next year will see another large change of base.

People are attracted by literature setting forth the countries they have in mind. Advertising is potent, in this as in any other line of business.

It is pretty safe to say that a great share of the immigration into Canada in the past few years has been attracted by judicious advertising.

North Dakota, we know, offers better advantages to the intending homeseeker than Canada. Its climate is milder, its crop is surer, its land is more fertile. Cooperation to attract attention to the state is what there is needed.

It is surprising how many people will be attracted to something that offers an unreasonable return upon the time, labor or money invested.

The same spirit in people that makes them patronize lotteries, mining stock ventures and get rich quick schemes, led a good many persons in this northwestern country to be attracted to Alaska wheat, the remarkable grain whose origin was obscure and shrouded in mystery, but which was to yield hundreds of bushels to the acre. Notwithstanding the evident imposture of this wheat, thousands of persons inquired as to where seed could be obtained, and it is likely that a good many purchased expensive samples of wheat, in the hope that one season's yield would bring riches. The closing of the mails to the promoters of this "miracle grain" proves that the government has at last stepped in to put an end to further deception.

Doubtless the promoters reaped a plentiful harvest while the gullible continued to buy. Wheat is like a good many other things—it is good property but hard to get and will yield only a fair return upon the investment of time and money. There is no miracle wheat, that will yield a thousand bushels for one.

The Bottineau Courant makes this sensible suggestion:

Immigration figures given out at Winnipeg show that during the months of February, March and the first half of April, 16,000 Americans settled in western Canada, 3,500 of whom came from North Dakota. This fact should not be overlooked by real estate dealers, commercial clubs and others interested in bringing people to North Dakota. This state offers exceptional advantages to the home-seeker and investor and money spent in advertising our resources is sure to bring good returns. In some portions of the state immigration associations have been formed and are doing good work. The Commercial Club of Bottineau is having literature prepared telling of the marvelous development of Bottineau county. Do your part in boosting "the land of promise and promises fulfilled."
