NOTES ON THE FAIR.

Among the 300 men here from Vancouver barracks are veterans who have seen fifteen and twenty years service, men who were in the expedition of 1872, who saw service in the tented field and heard the whizz of Indian arrows in the campaigns against Sitting Bull, Rain-in-the-Face and the Modoc chiefs in the lava beds.

There are at the State Fair some remarkable specimens of seedling apples. E. T. Branson, of Sheridan, shows a large golden pippin, with a blush on one cheek. The Major Walker place, near Zena, shows the Oregon red winter, a deep glossy shining red, of medium large size, that has a keeping record well into June. (C. F. Lansing, a Salem nurseryman, has sold 15,000 trees of this variety. D. H. Vanderpool, of Soap Creek, Polk county, shows a rose red apple of middle size, beautifully striped and dotted with green.
