Morris Brown, Florida, Lane Alabama Are Rated Championship Contenders In 1941:
Moody, Gilmore, Jenkins, Greene "Top"

AROUND THIS TIME every year, the annual preliminary analysis of Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football squads is erected.

As in the past, the teams will be divided into three classes: (1) championship contenders; (2) constant troublemakers; and (3) non-contenders for the title.

On the basis of major losses for 1941, caliber of returning lettermen, and expected form, the three groupings would seem to be the following:

best season in her history but may fall far short of triple honors... rebuilding off the the Atlanta, SIAC, national titles.

But the Purple Wolverines will be minus Quarterback Wilbur (Bull) Durham, Charles (Big Ada) Williams, Charles Booker, Lionel (Red) Grimes Captain Gerald (Stick) Brown and a few lesser important letter men this fall.

However, the Wolverines will still have John (Big Train) Moody, "the one-man gang", who set a modern individual scoring record last year with 109 points in nine games for an average of two touchdowns a game.

Moody, Tackles William Wysinger and Haywood Settles, Gold Dust Twins Willis Griffin and Alexander Sheppard at guard, Centers Clarence (Marietta) Brown and John (Link) Collier, Halfbacks Jolting Joe Jenkins, Buttel Joe Mitchell, Cecil (Skeet) Franklin, Clarence (Snake) Jackson, and George (Red) Keith, and Fullback Eugene Donaldson form the nucleus for another crackajack combination.

Florida had a brilliant junior-sophomore aggregation that set the woods afire last year, winning six, losing only one, and tying three. The lone defeat was a 7-6 upheaval by Alabama State, while Kentucky State and N. C. State were tied 7-7 and Wilberforce was deadlocked 0-0 in the colorful Orange Blossom Classic.

The Men in Orange have as their major losses William (Bill) Horton, All-American and All-Southern end, and Thomas Sutton, also a dependable terminal.

Lane was rated a champion-apparent in 1940 and may, in fact have been called a year too soon. The Red Raiders must be conceded better than an outside chance

True, Ox Clemons has some major losses in Guards Hodges and Lake, Tackle Berry, Ends Colonel Shaw, Sims, and Reasley, and Center Poates.

But Lane's outlook is definitely bright and with just a few "breaks", the Dragons may roll.

The only other championship contender is Alabama State who will be minus Delbert Roberts, All-Southern End, and Theodore (Texas) Smith.

Clark with lone defeats 14-6 to S. C. State and 20-7 to Morris Brown in the conference last year won four and lost two within the loop to crash first division for the first time in years. Her "overall" record was five wins, three losses.

Tuskegee won six and lost four in all games played, but had a 4-3 record within the conference.

Xavier finished in first division last year through the technicality of the Dickinson Rating System, although she won three and lost three within the conference. That was due to the rare fact that all her losses were to division clubs while she tripped all second division foes encountered.

LeMoyne had a record of more conference games won than lost last year, boasting a 2-1 ratio, but the Mad Magicians failed to play the loop quota of five contests and were left out of the Dickinson Rating System calculations. Talladega and Fisk suffered the same fate in that neither played as many as five SIAC tilts.

To win a title or contend seriously for a championship, a club simply can't get around parading at least one or two outstanding RUNNING BACKS
