Messrs PRINTERS,
As you value the rights of Freemen, and as you wish to serve your country, you are requested to publish the following.
An ALARM
To the respectable Citizens of Portsmouth.
The opinion, you shall esteem worthy of filling that important office, and dignified title--a PRESIDENT of this republic ;--(as the worthy gentleman, who has so long served you in this character, has signified his intentions of resigning his seat the ensuing year : He leaves the chair with the applause of every honest citizen and true republican.) For this office, several characters have been held up to your view--and their foibles, in some measure, pointed out.---I will not prescribe any man ; but only request of you, by that Freedom and Independence which you now enjoy--blessings bought by the blood of many a departed Hero--and by the regard due to the memory of those venerable martyrs, not to sell your privileges for a mess of pottage--They call to you from the plains where war and rapine rag'd, and in friendly accents intreat you to "Beware of your internal enemies ! Rouse yourselves from that supine state into which you have fallen ! Suffer not those liberties, bought at the expence of our lives, to be artfully taken from you !--Your enemies are many ; they are active and lively !--They begin to creep out from their holes and dens ; and, surprising to us, show their heads in open day-light !----They are about to interrupt you, in your choice of a PRESIDENT.--Awake ! Awake from your slumbers !-All is not safe! The Amorites are still in the land.--They that in the hour of difficulty, taunted at your misfortunes and wag'd the head at your calamity--they that rejoiced when America bled at every pore; and could, upon any petty victory gained by her enemies, toast a health to the British despot under his bloody banner !-- They, who never met. but to plot destruction, and aid and assist in rivetting the shackles of tyranny on the liberties of your country, now boldly claim the rights of Freemen and Citizens !--Shocking as these truths may appear to every True American, we are constrained to mention them ; and to warn you, by the same love that induced us to lay down our lives upon the Altar of Freedom, to beware of their artful wiles !-Call up all that is virtuous and noble in you :--Let the same spirit, which at the commencement of the late war, influenced your conduct, re-animate you to oppose an election, fraught with destruction to your liberties !-- Choose for a President, one, who has Ever been your Friend -who scorns a bribe--and who, through the late arduous struggle for those blessings you now enjoy, ever distinguished himself the True Patriot. A character like this deserves your suffrages. Let not the artful insinuations of sycophants turn your attention from such an one ; who has ventured his life, by leading your citizens on, and daring to meet your enemy in the field of battle ! Never let that horrid crime, ingratitude, be laid to your charge.---'Tho' invisible, we shall preside over your assembly-and keep a watchful eye on your actions !"
