In reply to the "Extract of a letter from a respectable citizen of one of the western counties," published in the last Gazette, Mr. Bertrand has authorized us to say, that he never held a conversation with a citizen of Izard county, as stated in the Gazette, on the subject of the mail route from Izard to Fayetteville. He says, "I did hold a conversation with a citizen of Izard county, on the subject of a road from Izard to Washington county. The person with whom I was speaking, told me, that Col. Sevier, when canvassing the last election, promised the people of Izard and Washington counties a United States road from Batesville, thro' Izard, to Fayetteville, in Washington county; and asked me if the subject of the road had been broached before Congress. I replied it had not. The subject of the mail route was then introduced. when I stated that one would go into operation on the first of January. The person with whom I held the conversation, must have confounded the promised U. S. road with the mail route."
