Full Text

The agent for the Indians at LaPointe, Wis., writes the Indian bureau that a few days since he paid a visit to the Lac Cour d'Oreilles reservation, and that while there he was entrusted by the Indians with $30,678, which he brought back with him and deposited in the Ashland National bank. He asked if there was any impropriety in that act, and if so what he had better do with the money. The Indian bureau immediately wrote a letter to this agent asking how he came in possession of the money; whether it was given voluntarily or taken from the Indians. That's the way to do it. If this trusted agent of the government has gone over to the reservation and knocked down the Cour d'Oreilles tribe and picked its pocket it is entirely proper for the Indian bureau to know it. If he is waltzing over the plains of Wisconsin in the guise of a highwayman it is time for him to confess. We are glad to know that the bureau has its eye fastened upon these Indian agents. It is our private belief that they are fully as remorseless as the homesteaders who burglarize the government domain.
