Extract of a letter from Paris, Jan. 20.
"Good sense as well as experience join to prove, that a certain firmness of conduct tempered with prudence, when manifested in the proceedings of great national bodies, rather than in individuals, is the salvation of a country. There can be no doubt but that France will regulate her conduct by this principle, and will triumph as much by moderation as by courage over those obstacles which seem to oppose the advancement of the new constitution on every side. The National Assembly having now assumed that authoritative tone that becomes the representatives of a great nation, with regard to the hostile projects in Germany; and the executive power being employed in measures of circumspection, founded on enlightened policy, which could not be expected in so ample a manner from a numerous assembly, whose deliberations are in the face of the public, we are happy in observing that such spirit in the government has already produced the happiest effects on the German princes bordering on the Rhine, particularly the elector of Treves. —The court of Vienna, too, acting in concert with them, with equity and prudence, gives us room to hope that notwithstanding the present appearances of war, Europe will remain in peace, and that the French revolution will have a favorable effect upon every nation that is wise enough to hate despotism without patronizing licentiousness."
