An alarm has been excited at Augusta. (Me.) by bodies of armed men disguised as Indians, being seen lurking in the adjacent woods, threatening to liberate the prisoners confined in the goal there, for the murder of Mr. Paul Chadwick. For several nights the citizens volunteered their services to guard the goal, but so serious are the apprehensions of an attack from this daring banditti, that the Sheriff of the county, deemed it necessary to demand a detachment of militia to defeat the threatened attempt, and a detachment of 200 men has been ordered by Maj. Gen. Sewall, to march to Augusta, armed and equipped for actual service, to aid the Sheriff in guarding the prisoners.
The S. J. C. is now in session in that town-The supposed murderers of Chadwick were arraigned before the Court on Wednesday last, and the bill of indictment read to them, after which they were remanded to prison their answer is not mentioned in the paper from which this account is collected.
Several inflamed and ridiculous letters on the above, unfortunate subject have been written to Boston and elsewhere--the heroes of which boast the hard tours of duty they have performed; and have marvellously escaped unhurt--it does not appear that any attack has been made by the insurgents—
By the Kennebeck Gazette of Friday last, it appears that new requisitions of militia are made to relieve those who were first called out
