Full Text

The political revolution in Maine is reaching its crisis and there seems considerable ground for apprehension that the affair may yet culminate in violence and bloodshed.

The term of Gov. Garcelon and the other State officers having expired, Hon. James D. Lamson, President of the Fusion Senate, claims to be Governor pro tem., but Gen. Chamberlain, commander of the State militia, who has been acting as Governor, refuses to recognize Lamson's authority. The General announces his purpose to retain control of the State House and public property until the Supreme Court passes upon the merits of the contest.

The Fusion Legislature is without a quorum and vigorous efforts are being made to cure the deficiency in order that the seats of several Republicans may be declared vacant and Fusionists admitted in their places.

The Republican members of the Legislature, including those counted out by the Garcelon Council, took possession of the Senate chamber and hall of the House of Representatives Monday evening, and organized both branches of the Assembly with something over a quorum in each. Several Fusionists participated in the proceedings. A series of questions to be propounded to the Supreme Court, involving all the points in controversy, was proposed and adopted, and the Legislature then adjourned until to-day, the 17th.

The Supreme Court assembled at once and took the questions under consideration, and a decision is looked for to-day. In view of the Court's responses to the interrogatories submitted by Gov. Garcelon relative to the action of the Council in throwing out returns for technical defects, the Republicans are very confident of a decision in their favor.

Excitement runs high at Augusta and armed men are arriving there daily.
