PHILADELPHIA, MAY 19.
We look with much anxiety for the official report of the cruise of the Ontario ship of war, which we learn by gentlemen recently from Washington, is a highly interesting document, and will, if published entire, silence the clamours of the privateer owners to the south. The distinguished rank which Captain Biddle has deservedly acquired in the service of his country, convinces us that the laurels which he has already won, will never be tarnished by any act unworthy the American name. We regret that a set of men should exist in this country, who bring a disgrace upon the character of American Citizens, by unlawful depredations upon the property of nations with whom we are at peace; we are also sorry to observe that the execution of Orders from Government, to suppress such highway robberies, are charged by these men upon the officer employed for that purpose as a criminal and personal interference.
There is one fact, which has come to our knowledge, with regard to the cruise of the Ontario, which speaks a language too loud to be misunderstood, and which redounds so much to the honor of Captain Biddle, and is so convincing a proof of his unwearied exertions to serve his country, that we cannot refrain from mentioning it. He effected the release of American property to the amount of about one million of dollars, which would have been confiscated but for his personal interference, and he also caused the release of 25 citizens of the United States from the dungeons of South America; an act of lenity never before extended to any nation whose subjects were taken with arms in their hands.
The correspondence with Lord Cochrane, when published entire, will present a different aspect from that which it at present bears.
