Condon To Get Quick Decision On Security

By C. YATES MCDANIEL

WASHINGTON (P-Dr. Edward U. Condon, former Bureau of Standards director now working in private industry, was promised today a prompt decision on whether his right to see government secrets shall be restored.

Secretary of the Navy Charles S. Thomas announced yesterday he had suspended the limited clearance given Condon three months ago after an earlier temporary suspension.

Condon, 52-year-old scientist who is research director for the Corning Glass Works, commented at Corning, N.Y.:

"I have been fully cleared four times by four different boards. I shall be pleased to be cleared a fifth time, and I know that a review of my record will end in such clearance."

Thomas told newsmen he would see to it that the review is carried out promptly "in fairness to Dr. Condon and because of the unusual importance of the case."

The question of security clearance arises because Condon's employers have in the past and may again perform government contracts involving classified information.

While director of the Bureau of Standards for six years until he resigned in 1951, Condon figured in various investigations. The House Un-American Activities Committee once described him as the "weakest link" in the nation's atomic security chain. Condon replied that if that was true, "this is gratifying information, because I'm absolutely reliable and therefore ... the country can relax."

He has noted that while with the Bureau of Standards he held full security clearances from the Atomic Energy Commission and the military departments.
