MORE TAX MONEY.
Did you ever watch the growth of taxes, regardless of dull time, hard times, peace, war, or pestilence? Did you ever observe how assiduously the average "public servant" will labor with apparently but one object ahead of him-the swelling of the footing of the "taxes collectable" column?
Some seem to hold the view that the only way by which assessments may be equalized is by taking the most over-assessed piece of property as a model and shove all others up to that standard. No work towards "equalization" has any other object worth while than to get more tax money out of the people. The lowering of the tax-burden of the people seldom has any charm.
The Commissioner of Finance of this city published a long list of the names of property tax payers and their assessments on real estate last week. Such publication, in all probability, has but one object-that of squeezing a little more tax-money out of him who may be below the standard. The idea of lightening anybody's burden is hardly an element in the equalization problem.
