For News of this Place; the Accident at Mirandia, proved true, and the Consequence was, the Spaniards took Possession of that Place, Oporto, and Braganza suffered the same Fate, after which the Spaniards seemed to have retired towards Almeida, but within these few days advice came, that Chavez was delivered up, it not being Tenable, the Garrison (not Regular Troops) spiked the Cannon, carried off the Ammunition and Provisions, and posted themselves upon the neighbouring Heights, where, with the Militia of the Country, they may possibly make a Stand, and Stop the Passages by annoying the Enemy, against whom Declarations have been published both against French & Spaniards, which amount to denouncing War in effect, tho' it has not been declared in the Form usual upon such Occasions. The Subjects of both these Nations have the 23d Inst. been ordered to quit this Country, in 15 Days; in Consequence of which, many French have and are getting themselves naturalized: Their Effects in the Custom House are set apart, and taken an Account of: almost all the Galley Servants and Porters are gone home. The English Factory at Oporto have been greatly alarmed, at the approach, (though distant) of the Spaniards, and Vessels have been sent them round from hence to ship off their Effects, that they may in Time be provided against the Worst: We hear some of their Families are coming to this City: but it is assured, that a Detachment from the Main Army, has been made for those Parts, since which this Body of Troops has gained a considerable Advantage over the Spaniards, by breaking a Bridge of Boats they had over Douro, near Montcorvo, where about 200 Spaniards were killed and taken, and the Rest repulsed. This will probably lessen the Panick, and give confidence to the Forces, Militia and Inhabitants of those Provinces; this and the Assistance of General Crawford, who is at Thomar disciplining the Portuguese Army, will we hope, in a little Time, convince the Spaniards, that the Conquest they meditate will prove Impossible, and a Scourge to themselves, especially when the Rest of our Army arrives, which by intelligence, has now been 16 Days at Sea, and may be here before closing this. Our foreign Posts did not go out this Week, and it is uncertain if any will be continued during the War, yet the Post came in Yesterday from Spain.
We are now at June 2. Yesterday arrived the Transports from England with Burgoyne's Regiment of Light Horse, &c. Several Officers and persons of Distinction, Lord George Lenox, his Lady, his General Townshend, Colonel Burgoyne &c. The Regiments of Foot are soon expected by another Convoy.
His Britannic Majesty's troops in Portugal will be augmented with 6000 foot, and about 750 horse for the reception of which transports are preparing.
