POLITICAL.
Every day's progress of Locofocoism shows, in light, clearer and clearer, that the Whigs can, if they will, have everything their own way at the coming Congressional and Presidential elections. How necessary, then, for them to be prudent, vigilant and united. They must have but one candidate in each District, and unite cordially upon him, in order to secure the next House of Representatives, which may be called upon, if Locofocoism, by dividing its forces, can succeed in preventing the election by the people, to make a President. They should, also, have but one candidate in the field for the Presidency. They should have no bickerings, no heart-burnings, no contentions, as to who should be the Whig standard bearer. No question as to who ought to be, who has the best claims, or who will best represent this section or that section of the country, should be asked. THE MAN should be an upright, high minded, straight-forward WHIG, in whose hands the people would feel that the reins of Government were safe. It is the country, and the institutions of the country, that the Whigs wish to preserve from destruction, or what is pretty much the same thing, to wrest from the hands of Locofocoism, and not the exaltation of any one man. No Whig is deserving of the Presidential Chair, who would not waive whatever claim he might have to the station for the welfare and success of his party. At least one illustrious example of this spirit of true, patriotic disinterestedness has already been exhibited. More may be. The Whigs are on the high road of success. Let them not quarrel by the way-side among themselves or veer to the right or left from the true path, and all will be well.
