"The cohesive power of plunder."-Calhoun
The most shameless bragging of a total disregard of principle that we have ever witnessed is exhibited in the following editorial from the Savannah Georgian. If the intelligent and honorable of our opponents can give even an implied sanction to a spirit so dishonest and reckless as is here evinced, they have descended to a position to which we would never assign them. But read:
DEMOCRATIC UNANIMITY—MR. RANTOUL.—When we remember the discussions that lately existed in the Democratic party in very many States in the Union, it is as surprising as gratifying to witness the unanimity with which Democrats of every name have gone into the support of Pierce and King. In New York, Barnburners and Hunkers seem to have joined in a friendly struggle for pre-eminence in their zeal for the ticket. In Missouri, Benton and his friends, though still standing aloof from the Democracy of the State, are warmly in favor of Pierce. So of Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. In these States Union Democrats, with a few exceptions, (as that of the editor of the Georgia Citizen,) profess the same devotion to our candidates as the great body of the Democracy. Last of all we have the intelligence that the Freesoil Democrats of Massachusetts (we hope our Whig friends will not go into convulsions at the news) have declared for the nominees of the National Democratic Convention. Even Rantoul, notwithstanding his ignominious expulsion from the Convention, writes to the Boston Times that the nominations are the "very best that could have been made."
When we contrast this cordial and general support of Pierce by the Democracy with the opposition to Scott everywhere showing itself among the Whigs, we feel authorized in anticipating the election of the former by such a majority as no Presidential candidate ever received in a contested election.
