The A.J.C. at San Francisco
It is difficult to understand why there has been so much jubilation in some quarters over the actions of the American Jewish Committee at the San Francisco Conference. The fact that the Committee did not attempt to hamper the American Jewish Conference in its activities for Palestine has caused some to stand back and remark that the Committee leaders are becoming good boys in intra-Jewish relations and therefore should be commended. Last month an outstanding Rabbi and Zionist leader actually made that statement at a public gathering in Jacksonville. The Committee, he said, is gradually moving toward the Zionist viewpoint.
As a good American we can think of only one answer to that line of reasoning. Nuts! By remaining outside of the American Jewish Conference the Committee has refused to recognize the working of democracy in American Jewish life. By abstaining from counteracting Zionist activities at the Conference the Committee was merely remaining neutral. And we don't like neutrals whether they appear in the World War II or in the Jew's own struggle for national existence.
