FOR THE RHODE ISLAND AMERICAN.

FAIR are the dreams of morn
When o'er the slumbering senses
Plays the resplendent beam of dawn
And light-clad forms of bliss dispenses.

But upward swiftly roll
The burning wheels of day,
And the rich visions of the soul,
Like fabled fairies, flit away.

Sweet are the dreams of Youth,
When Fancy, robed in flowers,
Shews Love, with joy and deathless Troth,
And beckons to their fragrant bowers.

Around their lighted shrine
Soft gales of Peace are breathing:
Beyond, sounds Glory's call divine,
And Fame her laurel crown is wreathing-

Onward, with rapid force,
Comes Fate's wide-sweeping wing:
Gloom spreads beneath its shadowy course,
And Winter shrouds the bloom of Spring.

The lamp of Day shall burn
Till Time and Nature sever:
The dreams of morn will oft return,
The lovelier dreams of Youth shall never

Gay, treacherous scenes! too long,
Mid your luxuriance born.
