The Paris correspondent of the New York World writes as follows:
What is worn on the Champs Elysees in the dainty equipages of the modern Aspasias, may be taken as a sure indication of the way the vane of fashion is turning.
We saw one of these leaders of the ton not long ago, in a superb black dress, glittering with jet, the only coloring visible being in the hair, which was of that delicate shade between canary and straw color: voluminous chignon, airy frisures on the forehead, and long ringlets at the back, shone out in rich contrast with the velvety tones of the costume. We hear from good authority that this is one form of the new autumn modes. Further, also, a very black chevelure is permitted, provided that the eye-brows are tinted a light, very light chestnut, while very black eye-brows must be worn with golden hair. Blue eyes, which are not of a very satisfactory tint to the possessor (I was about to say wearer), may be made a shade darker; either shade of hair is allowable with the cerulean eye.
Celestial, rosy red on the cheeks is very vulgar; a waxy pallor, with pink lips, can only be tolerated. We have a young friend whom nature has created in the very height of the present fashion--the blond type—who cannot go into the streets of Paris without being unpleasantly scrutinized, doubtless with the view of discovering whether art has not been called in to bring about an effect so apropos.
The crinoline question is definitely settled; small hoops, only three or four at the bottom, held together by a system of tackling about the waist, will be worn for many years, we predict, with short dresses, which, by the way, are in favor only as fatigue dresses, being inadmissible as full toilette, although any variety of fantastic drapery is adapted to them. Long sweeping trains maintain their supremacy for evening toilette. Gold ornaments are in high favor, and those now introduced are so very well made that the prejudice against imitations is completely forgotten, and the cheteday for the first houses of Paris are decorated with them. Jet trimmings, to the desolation of the church beadles, who have pecks of them to sweep out of the church aisles, are still a furore.
