THE FINAL RALLY.
The African Church was crowded to excess Saturday evening, by an old-fashioned, enthusiastic gathering of the Whigs of Richmond. The finest feeling prevailed, and the only subject of regret was the inability of Mr. B. Johnson Barbour to be present, on account of indisposition.
H. W. Fry, Esq., was called to the chair. Mr. Johnston, of the Whig, addressed the meeting briefly. Col. Meredith spoke with his usual clearness, force and pertinence. Mr. Botts followed in one of the finest speeches we have ever heard from him.
At a later hour in the evening and after the transaction of some business by the Vigilance Committee, Mr. Joseph M. Carrington came forward and announced that he would no longer be a candidate for the House of Delegates. The following resolution in commendation of his course was adopted by the Committee:
Resolved, That the thanks of the Whig party are due and are hereby tendered to Jos. M. Carrington, Esq. for his patriotic course in withdrawing from the present canvass, and thus enabling us at this important crisis to present an unbroken Whig front in this old Gibraltar of Whiggery.
