RESPONSE TO VIRGINIA.
This is a glorious result. Virginia has never faltered in her adhesion to Democratic principles and nobly has she now sustained her well proved character. To carry against an adverse administration, and with every effort made to produce a different result, fourteen members out of fifteen is indeed a great achievement, and well may the democracy of Virginia call upon the other members of the confederacy to imitate her example.
The result of this election, as an index of the estimation which the people have already made of the acts of the new administration, as compared with its professions, and of the course which the elections yet to be held will take, is the more gratifying, as it will probably ensure a democratic majority in the next House of Representatives.
New York—who has suffered so much from the serpents which she has nursed and fostered into life and vitality—feels doubly gratified at this splendid achievement of the unterrified democracy of the "Old Dominion;" and it will be perceived by a paragraph in another column, will to-morrow celebrate the result by firing a salute of 100 guns on the Battery. All hail to Virginia! the mother of States and of statesmen.
Grand salute of 100 guns in honor of the recent victory of the democracy of Virginia! The democracy of this city will fire a grand salute of 100 guns on the Battery at 12 o'clock to-morrow, in honor of the decided and brilliant victory just achieved by the Democrats of Virginia.
