The President of the United States, during his short stay in this City, received every mark of respect, attention, and affection to his person, which the public or individuals could demonstrate:
Of the latter, we cannot omit mentioning an elegant Fete Champetre that was given to this illustrious personage, his amiable consort and family, on Saturday last, on the banks of the Schuylkill, in the highly improved grounds of Messrs. Gray, by a number of respectable private citizens.—The company, amounting to near two hundred, ladies and gentlemen, assembled about two o'clock, and at three sat down to a sumptuous and splendid cold collation in which, (tho' only 24 hours were given for the preparations,) all viands and fruits of the season were assembled, and elegantly arranged. A band of music played during the repast, and at the close, several excellent songs were sung, and the following toasts were drank.
1. The United States.
2. Liberty and good government, to the French Nation.
3. Nations in alliance with the United States.
4. May the people of the United States, be as sensible of the perfection of their present Constitution as they were of the defects of their former one.
5. The state of Pennsylvania, and prosperity to its new form of government.
6. Few Laws, well executed.
7. May the Patriot be always blended in the Character of the Hero.
8. The Vice-President and other officers of the Union.
9. The Fair, and the Brave.
10. May the single be married, and the married happy.
11. Population, agriculture, manufactures, and commerce.
12. The arts, and sciences.
The President and the ladies then withdrew; when the following toast was drank with loud plaudits.
