Jefferson and Carroll counties were united on the gerrymandering system by Senator Faran, Esq. and his associates, for the purpose of securing two Loco representatives. Carroll became rebellious to 'the party.' Jefferson (Senator Tappan's) county was fastened to her for the purpose of keeping her in the traces. It seems the union, although forced, has been rather a fortunate one; Carroll has not only been able to keep on in her own road, but she has succeeded in persuading Jefferson to join her. Those who set the trap have been caught in it themselves. We feel now convinced that the Locos have not gained anything by their infamous system of attempting to deprive certain counties of their constitutional representation in the Legislature. So far as returns have been received, it has operated against them in every instance. Cunning and rascality may succeed, but 'truth is omnipotent and public justice certain.'
Stokely (W.) is elected to Congress over McCauslin (L. F.) in the district composed of Harrison and Jefferson Counties. Even the name of Jefferson, which the Locos endeavored to appropriate to themselves, seems to have failed them. Here Jefferson county has deserted them; Thomas Jefferson Henderson, is at length 'headed up,' and the great Thomas Jefferson Buchanan is sent into a state of retiracy, where we presume he will be permitted to remain.
