Admiration for the tax-supported institutions in this country was expressed by the speaker who stated that education in the United States, and also in Canada, is the privilege of everyone "Even the states are in accord with this practice,' he said, and many have passed laws to the effect that young people shall attend schools for a certain number of years.' Labor unions were mentioned by Dr. Caldwell as being instrumental in increasing educational opportunities in this country.

POOR DENIED CHANCE

Comparing education in the United States with the limited opportunities in foreign countries, the speaker brought out that in England anybody's child could go through the elementary schools, but that of all Great Britain's total number of children in tax-supported high schools, there are registered less than a quarter of a million, as contrasted with the three and a half millions in the country. The great private schools of England are the educational institutions for youth, he told the students, and few workingmen's sons are privileged to enter these schools

Speaking of the opportunities in Germany Dr Caldwell mentioned that there students did not have educational opportunities and that only four of the 26 great universities that existed before the war are open today. These colleges, he said, are offering work prescribed by a small committee, not one of whom is a scholar.

Environment is the determining factor in the type of education a child may secure in the United States, students were told, and this is the primary cause of migration Specialists in the field of education have found that $60 is the minimum amount that can be spent for essentials in our public schools, and yet 15 out of 48 states in the Union spend less than this amount.

CITES NEED

What America needs. Dr Caldwell well stated, is a better general distribution of incomes applied to education, and the available income distributed on the basis of the nation's children Dr Caldwell is distinguished in the field of teacher training and school administration. Two years ago he was visiting professor of education at Atlanta University.
