GOP Nominee Reported Leading in 21 of 32 States Checked
Chicago, July 20.—Governor Alf M. Landon, Republican nominee for president, is leading President Roosevelt in figures released today by the Farm Journal on its quadrennial presidential straw vote, which is taken among farmers.
The poll shows Landon ahead in 21 out of the 32 states represented, and with 51 per cent of the total vote as compared with 42 per cent for Roosevelt.
The poll will continue until the election. Today's figures were the first to be issued by the Farm Journal.
"All ballots in this first tabulation," the release announced, "have been obtained by personal calls on farmers in their homes. In most of the 32 states for which figures are given, many counties have been covered so that the result is a reliable and representative sample of farm opinion up to July 10."
"It may be added the latest figures show a slight Republican trend, the Republican share of the total vote having risen from 49.8 per cent to 54.7 per cent since the nomination of Governor Landon."
A total of 49,446 votes is shown in the poll so far. Landon is credited with 25,307 and Roosevelt with 20,869; Norman Thomas, Socialist candidate, has 461 votes, while Congressman William Lemke (Rep., North Dakota), candidate of the Union party, has only 291 votes. Miscellaneous candidates are credited with 2,518 votes.
Farmers in all the New England states favor Landon in these first figures, according to the poll. In New York state farming communities, Landon is running far ahead of the President. One state—Arkansas is shown as a tie. In the 10 states in which Roosevelt is ahead, one-half of them are southern states.
Iowa and Minnesota are the only two middle west states in which the President is leading.
