An account of the Scotch Exports and Imports to and from VIRGINIA and MARYLAND, from Christmas 1770 to Christmas 1773, making three complete years, taken from the records of office, and laid before Parliament 1775.

BALANCE gained to Scotland annually, besides the standing debt due from these colonies, in 1771, 245,128l. 0s. 7d. Do. in 1772, 286,411l. 16s. 4d. Do. in 1773, 304,951l. 12s. 1d.

AVERAGE gained to Scotland per annum for these three years, 278,830l. 10s.

As it is well known that no money was ever sent from Scotland to Virginia or Maryland, nor any remittance to either of those colonies made from Scotland, by a circuitous commerce, since the exportations from London on account of the Scotch merchants are fully paid for in general, by importations immediately to London from those colonies, it is fair to conclude that 278,830l. 10s. by which the imports exceed the exports on an average annually for the three years as above stated, is all clear gain to Scotland, besides the standing debt due from these two colonies, which at this time, anno 1775, is computed at one million sterling at least. This enormous profit of above 100 per cent. sterling, actually received, exclusive of the remaining debts, shows at how extravagant an advance the Scotch goods must be sold to the planters, and readily accounts for the sudden transition, so frequently seen, of a Scotch factor, not worth a groat, into a merchant of self-great importance. How incumbent is it on every patriot in these two colonies to exert his strongest efforts for rectifying this oppressive commerce?
