Lesson Costs $700
Mrs. Luella Smith of 80 Howell street was wiser but $700 poorer Thursday she told detectives after being made the victim of the old pocket book game to the tune of her husband's savings account.
It was the same old story. Mrs. Smith was walking down Marietta street when suddenly, a woman whom she described to detectives as being well dressed and "having lots of gold teeth" approached her.
"Do you see that man there," said the gold-toothed one pointing a bejeweled finger in the direction of a blue-coated gentleman who also had much gold plated incisor dentistry. "He just found a pocketbook, let's make him give us one of the money."
It sounded like a sound proposition to the excited Mrs. Smith who readily accepted.
The idea of dividing with the woman seemed to be just what he had planned, but only on one condition, each of the women was to put in what money she had. Mrs. Smith thought of her husband's bank account. Surely this would net much faster interest, she thought than the four per cent banks pay. She drew it out and handed the sum to the man. The gold toothed woman put in her share.
"Meet me here at one o'clock," said the man whose description has been given police and we will divide.
Mrs. Smith of course, waited in vain. She took her troubles to detectives who consoled her with the fact that only three other women in the past week have been swindled out of a total sum of $1300 by a like scheme. Detectives are working on the case.
