New York - (ANP) - The U. S. Supreme court decision outlawing segregation in the nation's public school was the "major civil liberties gain in the past year." the American Civil Liberties Union said this week.
Through its 34th annual report "America's Needs: A New Birth of Freedom." the Civil Liberties Union said the " . . . historic decision is already proving to be far more than a legal capstone; it is psychological release of additional energy, channelled through all sorts of official and unofficial experiments toward ending anti-Negro discrimination-in employment and housing and other areas, as well as education . . ."
The union warned, however, that the decision will require "an immense amount of thought and work, courage and forbearance .. in specific application. There will be much nullification of various kinds for some years, not only in the Deep South, but elsewhere."
Other civil liberties successes listed by the Union were the senate's Watkins committee condemnation of Sen. McCarthy for abuse of witnesses, and the counter attack by educational groups "against the assorted orthodoxies which seek to dictate educational content and method and personnel."
