NEWPORT, YAQUINA BAY,
November 11, 1877.
D. C. Ireland, Esq.,
Dear Sir: - I take the liberty of dropping you a line for the purpose of thanking you for the favorable notice given by your paper to an article published by myself in relation to certain Indians in this locality. I must give you the credit of publishing one of the most independent and spirited papers on the coast, as I notice you deal fairly with all questions without regard to locality, while at the same time making a determined fight for Astoria. In this respect your paper presents a striking contrast to the papers of Portland, where the whole press seem to be laboring under a fear that some portion of the state (aside from Portland), may increase in wealth and importance. This is a feeling that you are evidently not troubled with, having as you do entire faith in the future success of Astoria. I fully agree with you in this view, as it would seem that a river draining nearly if not quite one half the continent, and being one of the largest in America, must at no distant day have a large and flourishing city at its mouth. This idea I have entertained for years and I consider the future greatness of Astoria as assured beyond a possible doubt. You will probably notice in the Corvallis Gazette an article in relation to a railroad to this point, also you will see the week following an article in regard to a breakwater, or harbor of refuge for the Pacific coast. I wish particularly to call your attention to this last matter, as it is one that I think will interest you, as it applies to the whole coast. You will notice also that the Washington territorial assembly has passed a memorial on this subject. I brought the matter to the notice of Messrs. Reed and Warman of Pacific county, and they deserve credit for the prompt and energetic manner in which they brought the matter before their colleagues.
Please send your paper to my address regularly, and I will send the amount of subscription on my return to San Francisco. I remain yours respectfully,
J. J. WINANT.
