Event Details
In the election for State officers and members of Congress under the State Constitution on the 20th, candidates took strong ground against the Texas claim and pledged to resist it due to public opinion. The liberal course of the military officer had rendered them popular, and an attempt by Texas emigrants to foment discontent against Col. Monroe proved abortive. Information received indicated that Gov. Bell and Major Neighbors would arrive with a military force by the last of August or the first of September to enforce the Texas claim, arousing the people.
