The Nut Cracker

Sarasota, Fla., March 24.--Big league rookies are getting their necks measured for stylish two-edge axes and will soon be back in Wallow Hollow, Me., telling the home-town boys what an awful egg plant Manager McGraw turned out to be.

No rookie in spring training camp ever got a fair shake. Either the stewed cucumber who managed the team played favorites or else he wouldn't recognize a coming ball player if he wore a trade mark and was sewed up at the seams.

Cobb came up from nowhere. Speaker was four lengths back of that. A southern professor went butterfly sniping and bagged Jackson by mistake. Even Charley Ebbets would give a couple of smackers for these lads as an outfield, if delivered freight prepaid.

Most interesting species of rookie is the 100,000 beauty who comes into camp with air of great importance, and in week or so is given the air with no importance attached thereto.

Rookies you hear least about are generally the ones that step into swift circles and knock the rest of the league bow-legged. Berlenbach was just a wrestler until he got a reputation. He's still just a wrestler.

Scouts who close eyes and pick up second Babe Ruths in bush leagues are called ivory hunters which is dangerous to four-footed truck producers. You can make mah jongg sets out of ivory. Most rooks join loud close that acts with "Bring member of that, too."

Every spring big league club brings approximately 187 diamond in the rough down south for observation. Most of em need it. These crude gems always turn out to be cobble stones with thin coating of Mississippi clay.

A clay pack may transform a radish rancher into a Valentino, but it's wasted energy on a left-handed pea shooter.
