WAGE CUT FORCES BOARD TO RESIGN

Due to the drastic cuts made in the salaries of the officials of the town at the annual town meeting held last Monday the selectmen have received the resignations of all three members of the Board of Relief, such resignations to take effect immediately. Since the revaluation of property, which greatly increased the work of the board, the members have charged $100 each for their services, which required practically the entire month of February.

The board, in a statement issued yesterday said that they have always felt that the work, which has increased materially year by year, was really worth more than the amount charged. Notwithstanding this situation and the fact that the board is aware that numerous even more difficult applications are to be made to it this year, the pay of the board has been reduced to $40 each. Under the circumstances the board felt that they could not assume the additional work and responsibility.

The Board is composed of Frederick W. Seward, who is chairman and was re-elected for three years at the elections on Monday, Frank H. Smith of Putnam Heights and Daniel Labossiere of Daniel street.

All of these men have served on the Board for quite a number of years. As soon as they had decided that they could not do the work for $40 a year, they sent their resignation to the clerk of the board of selectmen. The resignation, which was signed by all three members of the board read:

Putnam, Conn.,
October 4, 1932,

To the Selectmen, Town of Putnam,
Putnam, Conn.

Gentlemen:

We hereby resign as members of the Board of Relief of the Town of Putnam.

Signed,
FREDERICK W. SEWARD
FRANK H. SMITH
DANIEL LABOSSIERE

Mr. Seward wishes to express to the public his great appreciation to those who have supported him from year to year and particularly in the recent election.

The selectmen have not as yet held a meeting and are not prepared as yet to make any statement. The selectmen have the authority of filling the vacancies without holding a special election according to the statute of the state.
